The exterior of the Church of Santa Tome, built in the 14th century and houses El Greco’s masterpiece, “The Burial of the Count of Orgaz.” Born in Crete, his real name was Doménikos Theotokópoulos, which is probably why he was best known as El Greco. It was the name given to him while he studied art in Italy and followed him to his new home and work environment of Toledo which is where his artistic skills matured and where he spent the rest of his life.
