We left Nazare on our way to Coimbra and made several stops along the way including a visit to Portugal’s finest architectural achievement, the Monastery of Batalha. The monastery was built by King John I who with his English queen, Phillippa, ruled from 1385-1433 and are entombed together in the Founders Chapel. The most beautiful part of the monastery is the unfinished, finely carved, enormous outdoor chapels. Sept. 15, 2013

Our last stop on our way to Coimbra is the Conimbriga Roman ruins are Portugal’s best Roman site with rather impressive mosaics. Sept. 15, 2013

Coimbra’s, college town is Portugal’s version of Oxford. The 700-year-old university was founded in 1290. Sept. 16, 2013
