Italy Day 45: Alberobello
Alberobello is pretty self-explanatory in that its considered the cultural capital of the trulli which has garnered a UNESCO World Heritage site designation. And, to prove that it’s true there are some 2,000 trulli in Alberobello.
The traditional construction style of a trulli (singular is trullo) are dry stone built huts with conical roofs of corbelled limestone slabs that can be easily assembled and disassembled. The trulli, specific to the Puglia region of Italy, spread during the 1600s.
The name Alberobello comes from the Latin “Sylva Alboris Belli” which literally means Forest of the War Tree. And, oddly enough farmers and peasants built their trulli in the middle of a forest once occupied by criminals.
Let’s explore Alberobello and its trulli world.
